Miss America is telecast live on ABC tonight, tons will be watching to see who is the next lucky girl to take home the coveted title! I have watched Miss America almost every year, they have certainly changed their image over the past few years. Miss America has stuck to their traditions, which is something I appreciate. I will admit that I have not been super passionate about this system, as I have always competed in the USA system. I always wondered if I competed in MAO what my talent would be?? I was a competitive dancer in HS, but gave it up in college... I kind of always joked that my talent would be sewing a garment on stage (I read somewhere that someone actually did this), because of my Fashion Design degree....I am not sure what I would complete an entire garment in 2 minutes, but I can hear Tim Gunn saying "make it work!".
I am going to review the prelims gowns... this will all be the dresses I liked, the trends I noticed and so on. I will not be doing a "worst dressed" list, because A. I don't want to be negative. B. I think its probably pretty obvious which dresses are the worst, and why rub it in? C. Fashion is a matter of opinion, and that is why I LOVE fashion! I will probably be using my "USA" eyes while I review....so this might not line up with what the America fans are into! Here goes!
This was THE color of the pageant! It makes sense since the name of the color alone invokes the thought of royalty. Georgia stunned in a satin Sherri Hill Custom gown, lots of detail in the beading. I love the Delaware and Texas let the color do the talking and both had great seaming. Ohio did not only a daring slit, but a daring plunged neckline. Montana's dress had the best back of them all...I wish there was a good picture to share.
This baby blue trend is usually saved for the teen division, but these three women made this sweet color sexy again and broke tradition. New Jersey kept her lines and beading very clean, you can't not look at her face, plus the dress makes her look so tall! Virgin Islands gown had me going back and forth on if I loved it or hated it, which usually means I loved it. Something about VI's gown makes me think Miss Universe. New Mexico had one of my favorite mermaid gowns. This is a custom gown by Gaspar Cruz, who dressed the winner from last year.
It was nice to not see a ton of white gowns, I am sick of seeing everyone wear white! I am absolutely in LOVE with Louisiana's gown from Jovani Couture. I have seen this gown in person and it is beautiful, I wish LA had pushed her hair back behind her shoulders so that you could truly see the beauty of this dress. South Carolina's dress is one of my favorite of the pageant. The beading and the belt make this gown extra special. Tennessee has the traditional white gown that is classic and everyone likes. Michigan wowed in an exaggerated hourglass mermaid.
The color emerald green was a huge trend! I love that pageant girls are starting to do more daring color choices! My favorite of the green girls was South Dakota! I believe this was a Tarik Ediz gown, which is a designer that is on the up and up. I did notice that another girl was wearing the same dress in red...Shame on who ever let that happen!
BLACK AND BLUE
I will always love a blonde in a black gown, it is such a contrast and it works every time! Missouri knows her body and her skin tone, she nailed her gown choice. I love how simple Connecticut's gown is, I know its nothing new, but it is stunning on her. Oregon's gown is the one I would steal for myself and wear for my next big event! Oklahoma's gown is beautiful, it is a Sherri Hill Custom and competes very well.
MY FAVORITE GOWN OF THE NIGHT
Miss Georgia has my favorite gown of the prelim pageant. This is obviously custom made for her, as I have not seen this design on the stage before. She chose a PERFECT color for herself and I imagine it flies when it walks! I do think this whole look reminds me of Kristen Dalton, Miss USA 2009, which I loved!
Another thing that noticed is Maggie's styling the whole competition is on point.... down to her hair and makeup.
That is my overall review of the gowns from Miss America Prelims. Best of luck to all the ladies at the Finals!
